August 5, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessNew fencing at the Adelphi Hole
August 5, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessI couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve called for a new fence at the Adelphi Hole.
A new chainlink fence is replacing the destroyed one right now.
About time.
Who’da thunk it looked like this?
August 4, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessOur hopes are up that the Morse Market, 1430 W. Morse Avenue in Rogers Park, will do all they can to restore this beautiful, ‘architecturally significant’ facade which has been hiding for years.
Though some of the terra cotta flourishes have crumbled, or been chipped away, these are totally replaceable through Gladding, McBean–fabricators of ‘Architectural Terra Cotta’.
Let’s make certain the owners of Morse Market check out their website: http://www.gladdingmcbean.com/
We must end the destruction of historic architecture in Rogers Park. Now…today!

What the Weird Sisters Saw
August 3, 2009 by rogersparkbusiness
Idle Muse Theatre Company
at The Side Project Theatre
July 9th – August 9th, 2009
Idle Muse Theatre Company presents the first in its ongoing series of classic works adapted for small performance spaces with a stunning re-envisioning of Shakespeare’s seminal tragedy, MacBeth. What the Weird Sisters Saw re-cuts and refocuses the original text to tell the story of three women we will eventually come to know as the “secret, black, and midnight hags.” Viewed through the lens of Weird Sisters’ confused visions, the classic tale of ambition and murder unfolds, taking a look at the events that might have led up to the fateful prophecy on the blasted heath if the story began in a different place. Drawn entirely from the Bard’s own words, What the Weird Sisters Saw is a sharp and magical examination of fate, will, and the desire to know.

Tales of the Night: Leprechauns and Faeries
July 31, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessJust last evening, I posted the escapades of yesterday at the parking lot owned by Rany Management at 7313-15 N. Sheridan Road. Just check through the previous post below and compare those photos with what I am posting tonight. The locations are approximately the same in both sets of photos.
Normally, I don’t care for surprises…but this one, at about 6:30 AM, was a doozy. It seems Rogers Park must have drawn a few leprechauns and faeries into the neighborhood, doesn’t it?
Look, it’s magic–has to be leprechauns and faeries! No one else was interested in cleaning up this swinish parking lot.
A lot of drinking goes on here, so there were quite a few beers cans and liquor bottles. There is no working lighting in the parking lot, so the leprechauns and faeries must have super night vision, don’t you think?
You see, at first I thought Al Goldberg, the Hallmark & Johnson contact on this supposed sale, may have read the blog and sent someone over early this morning. I am certain, however, I would have seen some activity. And I have it on the best of authority that the litter was still there at 5 AM!
I really don’t think the Buddhists come to Shambhala, on the other side of the fence, quite that early in the morning. They rarely clear their walkway in winter, so why would they pick up litter at a for-profit parking lot?
Having done my best detecting, and remembering Occam’s Razor, the only answer can simply be this: Leprechauns and faeries have found Rogers Park to their liking in all aspects but one: Litter!
So I guess the wee folk have taken it upon themselves to go around our little two square miles and pick up after the idiots who think the world is their garbage pail.
Thank you, wee folk! What an improvement!
And if Rany Management would just hire a landscape crew that owns a ‘chipper’, the potential rat’s nests of kindling wood and tree trimmings could be recycled.
We must not learn to rely on the leprechauns and faeries. They are merely showing us a better way to live. Why not do YOUR part?
The Case of the Lazy Landlord
July 29, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessMeet Mister Machete…
…and his partner, Mister Mower…
…who also doubles as Mister Sprayer (does he get hazard pay for this position?).
They arrived this morning at about ten, to do some tidying up at the parking lot at 7313-15 N. Sheridan Road. I tried to stifle my high hopes that a good clean-up would finally be performed on this property!
Alas, while Mister Mower chopped everything from stones to beer cans to strapping tape, Mister Machete was most savagely relieving himself of all pent-up aggression!
Here is the aftermath of their “tidying up”. Tra lah!
No gold stars today for these two, or for their slumlord employers:
Rany Management
1950 W MONTROSE AVE
CHICAGO, IL
60613-1036
Phone: 773-728-9000
You would think Al Goldberg might drop them a hint…something subtle, like:
HAVE YOUR IDIOT LANDSCAPE CREW PICK UP THE DAMNED GARBAGE, AND TAKE AWAY ALL THE TRIMMINGS, AND SWEEP THE DAMNED WALKS!
If I were Al Goldberg, I would tell Rany Management just that! Maybe I’ll do it anyway. Hmmm, just did, didn’t I?
An added thought…do not allow your dogs on this grass, or to sniff around the trimmings. The area was SPRAYED with who knows what, and the landscape company (a somewhat loose term for these two) should be taken to task for not setting out the little warning flags!

Rainy morning on Sheridan and Morse
I’ve wanted to post this one for a while.
Taking the show
July 27, 2009 by rogersparkbusiness“Sunday, July 26, 2009 from 1 to 11p.m.
Clark Street (between Morse & Estes)
Admission is free – Vendors Welcome
Live Music, Food from around the world, Children’s activities,Fair trade vendors, Arts and crafts and much more…”
This years Clark Street Festival was smaller and shorter than last year, but it still managed to provide entertainment for those who attended.
The following was a highlight:
I spoke with Alan Goldberg
July 26, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessI spoke with Alan Goldberg at a recent Rogers Park BizArts event.
I introduced myself as Bill Morton.
I told him that I am Bill Morton who tried to save the Adelphi Theater from demolition.
I told him that I was the one who formed the non-profit organization, Citizens for the Adelphi Theater to renovate the theater, oppose the demolition and oppose Alderman Joe Moore’s pre-paid rezoning.
I reminded him that he called me at Quest one day to ask me why I am fighting so hard to save the Adelphi Theater.
He replied… “… and now it’s just a hole in the ground”.
I patted him on the shoulder and quietly said to him, “I told you this would happen”.
He just looked down in disgust.
Since then, I have become his friend on facebook.
I read his updates about the squirrels taking over his garage, and about his musical events and adventures.
It was very satisfying to hear him admit that I was right on about the Adelphi Theater, but…
I have yet to hear any statement or apology from Alderman Joe Moore, his ZULAC (rubber stamp advisory committee) or the Rogers Park Builders Group.
Let’s settle this once and for all.
The entire Rogers Park community now has a dangerous hole in the ground and deserves a solid formal explanation.
The Adelphi Theater is now an unsecure vacant hole in the ground that serves gangbangers and prostitutes and drug abuse.
At the very least, while we were renovating the theater, it was a secure, locked-up area.
What do you have to say for yourselves?

former Citizen for the Adelphi Theater
current President of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce
resident of Rogers Park for over a decade

TYING UP TRAFFIC TO FIX THE HOLES
July 23, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessA flurry of digging up old sewers began on N. Sheridan Road today, tying up traffic, which was reduced to a single southbound lane–Boo-Hoo!
The Lunt Avenue pothole will be fixed!
Wonder who THAT could have been?
Then the worker said, “But we didn’t bother with him. This is a STATE job and we were hired by the STATE. Chicago’s got no jurisdiction in this job.”
And Joe? How’s that paint job comin’ along at the house? And your “poof” this morning–just a bunch of whining and self-serving pandering!

I pulled out the calculator to get the total, and then the cost per tree.
TOTAL: $869.35
There are 4 trees, so naturally, I divided by 4.
$217.34 PER TREE
Here’s a shot of the first tree.
Here’s a shot from a different angle of the same tree.
This shot shows all 4 trees from the south.
Here are all four trees from the north.
Confused, I went back to the calculator to crunch the numbers again, and came up with the same totals.
Each tree is bordered by 30 bricks, 7 and a half per side, for a total of 120 for the 4 trees. I don’t know if the bricks are new, but Home Depot did advertise a similar paver brick in their July 17, 2009 online ad on their website, www.homedepot.com. The sale price was $0.39 each.
Even if the original cost per brick had been $0.69 per brick, that total would have been only $82.80 plus tax.
The flowers, as you see, are Impatiens–nothing special. So if even $100.00 was spent for new brick, that would leave a balance of $769.35 for the flowers, or $192.34 per tree. Incredible, isn’t it?
Something is questionable about this particular entry, folks. And we have known this Ald. to spend frivolously. I, for one, cannot discern one scintilla of ‘transparency’, can you?
So, Joe, what was the money REALLY spent for?
Interestingly, the date of these exhorbitant tree planting costs is the same date Joe e-mailed his “poof” entitled: Pigeons Evicted From Metra Underpasses.
Facing Foreclosure?
July 23, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessMortgage help at McCormick Place
July 23, 2009
BY FRANCINE KNOWLES Staff Report
Homeowners at risk of foreclosure will be able to get free help in modifying their mortgages and in some cases on-the-spot modifications at a four-day event at McCormick Place that begins Friday.
The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, which has helped some home owners permanently reduce their mortgage interest rates to as low as two percent and helped others reduce their outstanding principal and interest rates, will host the event as part of the non-profit’s national “Save the Dream Tour.” Roughly 250 counselors will be on hand each day to provide free assistance. Among lenders that will be participating are JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Countrywide, Fannie Mae, Wells Fargo and others, the group’s representatives said.
Homeowners seeking help will need to bring their:
• Last 30 days of pay stubs or other proof of income
• Most recent mortgage statement
• Most recent property tax bill
• Proof of homeowner’s insurance, the declarations page
• Last two bank statements
• A letter telling lenders why assistance is needed
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 24-27 at McCormick Place North, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive.
Pre-registration is recommended, but not required. For more information or to register, visit www.naca.com or call 1 888 499-6222.
Something to do tonight! Come on out!
July 21, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessART HISTORY 101, 49TH WARD-STYLE
July 21, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessOLD BUSINESS, NEW BUSINESS: SAME OLD, SAME OLD!
July 21, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessShortly after 8:00 this morning, I took these photos at 1209 W. Chase Avenue, here in Rogers Park.
This property was once the site of the North Shore School, formerly known as the Birchwood Country Club, built in 1906. It was a great part of Rogers Park history.
Some 16 months ago, the building was haphazardly torn down. The land was left ungraded, and contaminated with asbestos. The owner of the land is Swanette Triem, who also owns the building to the east–1201 W. Chase Avenue.
Dear Swanette claimed she wanted to build a permeable-surface parking lot on the land, which would include some ‘green space’. She followed the typical ‘Chicago Way’ and did this in January and February of 2008:
Triem, Swanette
Occupation: Landlord
Employer: Self

In March, the building began to be torn down. Asbestos was found, but the building demolition continued. No asbestos removal precautions were nor have been taken.
We in the old Birchwood neighborhood of Rogers Park have faced this blight long enough. And we’ve had quite enough of Ald. Joe “Where’s the Money?” Moore’s Pay-to-Play politicking, haven’t we?
There may be a thread of hope, according to this morning’s Sun-Times.
Crackdown on vacant lots
$250-A-DAY FINE Alderman cites horror of Ryan Harris case
July 21, 2009
BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter fspielman@suntimes.com
In July, 1998, the body of 11-year-old Ryan Harris was found in a vacant and overgrown lot in Chicago’s crime-ridden Englewood community.
Harris had a fractured skull. She was sexually molested, her underwear torn and shoved in her mouth. Weeds were stuffed in her nostrils. A bloody brick was found nearby.
Ald. Joann Thompson (16th) is determined never to re-live that nightmare.
On Monday, Thompson convinced the City Council’s Buildings Committee to crack down on the negligent owners of unkempt and debris-filled vacant lots who, she complained, use the city as their “private lawn care service.”
Vacant lot owners are already required to remove trash and debris, put up fences, keep grass and weeds below ten inches high and post ownership signs. Thompson’s ordinance would more than double the fine for violating those conditions — from $100 a day currently to $250.
Read the rest here.
Ms. Triem, and others who have vacant, blighted land in Rogers Park, should be immediately fined from the point at which the weeds reached above ten inches! As you see, there is also NO ownership sign, there is trash in the high weeds, and the fence is in deplorable condition.
And Ald. Joe “Pay-to-Play” Moore is in part responsible for this and other blight in his 49th Ward. It is up to him to make certain landowners comply with city rules and regulations.
After all, he says he’s on the job 24/7!

July 18, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessRARE PHOTOS? NOT, THEY’RE EVERYWHERE IN THE 49TH WARD!
July 18, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessThis is one of those RARE times when I have posted photos straight fom the camera–no Photoshop, no adjustments, no cropping.
I have lived in Rogers Park for 2 years and four months, and for all that time, this sewer has been slowly collapsing.
Even the CTA buses try to avoid it these days…for fear of their articulated bus getting stuck in a SINKHOLE!
I took the 147 Outer Drive Express from downtown last night, and as soon as we crossed ‘Granville’ (the southernmost boundary of the 49th Ward), the bus bumped over another of these collapsing, now ancient sewers.
One would think that an alderman would have these checked out, inspected THEM over the PAST 19 years, because he cared about the residents of his ward and their safety. After all, these streets are within his/her jurisdiction, aren’t they? Or…doesn’t Joe have ‘CLOUT’ anymore, because of the ‘foie gras’ debacle?
Unfortunately, the 49th Ward is ‘governed’ by Ald. Joe (Dumb Progressive) Moore, and apparently NOT subject to the laws of the City of Chicago. It has become more important to ‘tear down’ this area, in order for Joe to ‘line his pockets’–for his impending ‘retirement’. Can’t wait, can you, Joe?
Courtesy: Grammar Gal Former site of the Adelphi Theater, now abandoned by Moore crony Chad Zuric, which Joe Moore COULD HAVE SAVED!
What are we, you and I the taxpayers, paying this ald. $110,556+ per year for? ‘Pigeon spikes’ and ‘free parking for a select few’? As Americans, we DO have the right to DEMAND specific services.
After all, Joe Moore IS our ‘elected servant’. Shall we finally begin, in his LAST year as Ald., treating him as such–or not?

The actors of Purple Bench Productions put on a terrific presentation in Touhy Park late this afternoon. With minimal scenery and lighted only by the summer sun, they gave the substantial audience a taste of Verona in Touhy Park!
Rogers Park sorely needs more cultured events, where its diverse residents merely gather to enjoy the arts, whether it is Shakespeare or Dancing at Willye B. White Park or the upcoming World Music Festival, also to be held at Willye B. White Park in September.
I have to say, this audience was truly drawn in, even as sirens wailed from fire trucks leaving the nearby Clark Street Fire Station. This little bit of live theatre was an escape from the dreary world we see on TV every day.
Thank you to Purple Bench Productions and their sponsor, Friends of the Parks!
REMEMBER THIS?

Perhaps, just perhaps, while Ald. Joe Moore (Litterer-49th) is out doing so many social calls and pedalling in the neighborhood today, he could carry a garbage bag and PICK UP HIS OWN TRASH!
That’s right!
Bill Morton took these photos on July 8th.
Look at the dates above on Joe’s flyer.
TEN days after the final “Trash” event, Ald. Joe Moore’s glossy flyers are STILL littering Rogers Park and the 49th Ward!
That’s some kind of ‘GREEN’ Corps you’ve got going there, Joe!
I might remind residents and voters: The only ‘GREEN’ Joe cares about is the money you contribute to line his pockets! What an “ENVIRO-HYPOCRITE”!

July 10, 2009 by rogersparkbusinessThis a part of the Jungle Gym at the Harold Washington Playlot, 7710 N. Paulina Street in the Germania (North of Howard) area of Rogers Park. Doesn’t it look swell?
Throughout last night’s CAPS Beat 2422 meeting, children climbed, crawled and slid, while others took advantage of the swings behind it. It’s a small playlot, constructed on land a single building used to occupy, so quarters were tight, and the speakers were sometimes difficult to hear. The Chicago Police Department presence there didn’t seem to faze these children, except for two little guys who seemed to be admiring one officer’s gun for quite awhile.
A dozen and a half to two dozen residents were in attendance, along with several CPD senior officers. Issues raised included non-response to neighbors’ 911 calls regarding older teens using the playlot after hours, destruction of playlot property, excessive noise, and parking on the streets North of Howard.
And the children played on, doing what they usually do at a playlot. But, because there were so many adults and police present, I feel it wasn’t a ‘normal’ evening there.
After the meeting, Sergeant Delgado of the 24th District distributed a number of door and window locks, which had been donated by someone whose name I didn’t catch. I considered this a nice but very odd gesture, as CPD knows this area is STILL a “No-Man’s Land”, as it was called in the late 1800s. The area is rife with drugs, gangs, and just plain LOW people who feel they are ‘entitled’ to do any- and everything they want, when they want. They claim to be poor, while driving Cadillac Escalades and eating take-out from every fast-food joint on Howard Street.
Thanks to Ald. Joe Moore, this area has been in a state of continuing deterioration socially for his entire 19-year tenure in the City Council. Since the retirement of Commander David Sobczyk, whose short effort with the ‘Howard Street Initiative’ produced many positive feelings, the CPD’s stance seems to have been altered somehow. More to come on this in future posts.
Contrary to what was stated by Sergeant Delgado, the neighbors surrounding this playlot are NOT responsible for the supervision of the children. That belongs with the PARENTS, always has and always will. For all the social service organizations in this area, one would think their emphasis on PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY would have been felt by now. Not the case, folks, no, not at all.
It’s the same old, same old…as it was when Germania, North of Howard, was first called “No-Man’s Land”. And Ald. Joe Moore seems to be doing everything in his power to make sure it stays that way!
